SHOW NOTES:

You will enjoy a mish mash of reminiscing thoughts on the 2nd season (year) of your favorite podcast, NDIOS. In this show, we ruminate and riff on the relevance of nebulous things such as ‘literary’ versus ‘genre’ type works, and whether ferrets are worthy pets.

WRITTEN BOOK REVIEWS:

Ryan: 4 Stars “…With purple prose, Bradbury waxes nostalgic about childhood bogeymen, wonderfully creepy…

Wilk: 2 Stars “…Its basically the same plot as every care bear tv show. Only it is not as edgy…

Rick: 4 Stars “…Bradbury’s writing has exceptional poetic quality…

John Doyle a/k/a Dole (Special Guest): 4 Stars “An imaginative and surprisingly dark take on a boyhood and adulthood rite of passage story full of symbolism and intricate prose.

SUBJECT MATTER:

“Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury

Book: “Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury

“The carnival rolls in sometime after midnight, ushering in Halloween a week early. The shrill siren song of a calliope beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two boys will discover the secret of its smoke, mazes, and mirrors; two friends who will soon know all too well the heavy cost of wishes. . .and the stuff of nightmare.

Few American novels written this century have endured in the heart and memory as has Ray Bradbury’s unparalleled literary classic SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. For those who still dream and remember, for those yet to experience the hypnotic power of its dark poetry, step inside. The show is about to begin. The carnival rolls in sometime after midnight, ushering in Halloween a week early. Soon after, the town is visited by a seductive stanger named Mr. Dark and his Pandemonium Carnival. WILK’S SHOW NOTES:

On this month’s episode of NDIOS we had a very special guest, John Doyle (a/k/a “Dole” from the stoner rock group “I Decline”). Dole just came back from fixing a hair metal band’s new album, but don’t worry no guitar solos or monster ballads were harmed.

The book that we discussed was Something Wicked This Way Comes. Ryan used a horrible voice to introduce this book. This twist of his vocal chords was the highpoint of the show for Wilk (me). The majority of the hosts and guests liked the book. The most intelligent and accomplished member of the panel, Dave Wilkinson, did not like the book. However, he did like the author and was eager to participate in the discussion about Bradbury. He was also eager to drink heavily throughout the broadcast.

The movie was also well received by three out of the four. Dole made some really good points in defense of the book and movie. He stated that a film can often be the result of someone’s passion and should not be simply disregarded with a negative platitude. Wilk thought that the movie sucked.

So, next time you are strapping into a dandelion-wine, powered rocket aimed at mars, make sure you cover your body in talcum powder, because there is no deodorant in outer space!*

FUN FACTOIDS:

On the podcast we mentioned that this book was first incarnated as a short story called “Black Ferris,” in the magazine “Weird Tales.” You can check that story out right now at this link:  https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://64.62.200.70/PERIODICAL/PDF/WeirdTales-1948may/58-63/

Also on the podcast, we talked about the annual Ray Bradbury Story Telling Festival that is held in his honor in Waukegan, Illinois through the public library (They also hold the Annual Ray Bradbury Creative Contest). For more information on that event visit: http://www.waukeganpl.org/Storytelling-Festival. This library was selected to house Bradbury’s personal book collection.

Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Dark Shadows) is talking about remaking this – and sticking closer to the original material. Check out this article: http://geeknation.com/seth-grahame-smith-to-direct-disneys-new-take-on-something-wicked-this-way-comes/
