S3E2M – Flowers for Algernon (movie)*

“Well, we did it. We murdered everyone. And not even a thank you or a hug. Probably because they were all dead.”

This iconic line is nowhere found in either movie based on “Flowers For Algernon.” Which is a shame. Because we had to watch both movies, one of which has Matthew Modine in the role he was born to play: an insufferable mentally inferior drip. But watch them we did. Oh how we did.

The three panelists/bitter enemies/lifelong friends/mostly bitter enemies—preferred the older, Classic Coke version of “Flowers For Algernon.” This movie was called “Charly” and it did not feature Matthew Modine. It was pretty dull and hard to watch. On the plus side it had Peter Parker’s uncle in it. Spoiler—he doesn’t die in this one. He did win an academy award for his early portrayal of a dynamic Forest Gump.  So, yeah, we watched this over the internet, hunched over our computer screens, counting the minutes of life ticking away as the flashes and pops sent messages to our brain.

Others might call it justification for attacking an American Embassy. It has Matthew Modine, the answer to a question no one asked. The actor who resembles a bowl of soggy cheerios, but lacks their charm. It was terrible knowing this movie existed, worse watching it, intolerable to think we may be perpetuating it. Burn that movie.

So, in short, read the book, avoid the movies. Which won’t be hard since they are only available online.

On the book episode we mentioned that “Flowers for Algernon” is very popular in Japan. Indeed, its been dramatized at least twice since this writing: and
